The Open: BBC to end live television coverage one year early
The BBC's TV coverage of The Open will change from live to highlights one year earlier than planned.

From 2016, the BBC will show extended TV highlights, provide live radio coverage and continue to cover the tournament online over the four days.

Peter Alliss will remain part of the BBC team covering The Open.

BBC director of sport Barbara Slater said it was "critical the BBC targeted its resources to provide maximum value for money for licence fee payers".

The oldest of golf's four major championships will now be broadcast live on Sky from 2016, rather than 2017, as had been announced in February.

"We know that many fans are unhappy with the loss of rights and in an ideal world the BBC would still be the home of live coverage of The Open," added Slater.

"The BBC is faced with some challenging financial savings targets. Sport on the BBC is not immune to those pressures and they are compounded by the highly inflationary nature of the rights market."

Martin Slumbers, chief executive of the R&A, said: "The relationship between the R&A and the BBC spans more than 60 years and we understand the challenging circumstances that the BBC is currently presented with."

As long as Sky get Peter Alliss on board, I couldn't care less where it is shown.

Re: The Open: BBC to end live television coverage one year early
So many people can't afford to or have nowhere to go to do either, so it's as good as the same to be honest.

Of course there are only a few F1 drivers, but then again there are several categories of open wheel (and other forms of) racing. It's tough to get to the top in Motorsport.

Not a lot of point in having this debate though seen as you obviously just dislike Formula 1 so of course you want to see less of it. It gets great ratings though, so obviously the BBC place value it and want as much of it on television as possible. It's obviously more important to them than the open.

The real issue is that it's a shame they have to choose.

It'll be Wimbledon next. Obviously not 'far reaching' enough.

"Obviously your point about the sport being accessible to only a few is valid, but golf is increasingly like that in the UK as well"

Number of British formula one drivers, what 2 or 3? Number of golf club members (ignores non members who play golf) who are affiliated to English Golf Union, over 750,000. I wonder which sport has the accessibility problem?

Not really. They only show half the races live

I would say that is extensive.

I bloody hope they do send everyone available to Rio.

Their coverage of the Olympics is absolutely brilliant, and i wouldn't want that to change.

They're not- I think they are just talking about text updates and coverage on the website, rather than streaming any sort of live coverage. (Unless you've explicitly read that elsewhere?)

Sky will automatically get online rights along with TV rights, otherwise it's not worthwhile for them.

Hopefully, they will still be able to send tens of thousands of staff to {jolly-up} [edit] Olympics in Rio.

Why are they paying for the right to show the thing on mobile phones? If they can't afford TV programmes they shouldn't be extending into other areas far more suitable for the private sector.

Not really. They only show half the races live and scrapped all the rest to save money. Hardly 'extensive'. I will say that their coverage is total and utter shit compared to Sky's though. I'd be willing to bet they get higher viewing figures for the F1 than the golf, though. That's pretty much all that counts when making these sort of decisions.

Obviously your point about the sport being accessible to only a few is valid, but golf is increasingly like that in the UK as well.

Problem with Sky coverage is I'll have to put up with listening to that boring cunt Monty more often.

He is to golf coverage, what Michael Owen is to football.

And an advert every 10 mins - joy!

Yet they still find the funds, for extensive coverage of that egalitarian, played by millions, accessible to all sport, that is Formula 1.

BBC coverage of The Open Championship
bbc statement ...

Barbara Slater

Director, BBC Sport

The BBC is announcing today that the R&A has agreed with our proposal to amend the broadcast arrangements for The Open Championship one year earlier than planned. From 2016 rather than 2017, the BBC’s coverage of The Open will take the form of extended peak time TV highlights, live radio and enhanced digital rights.

So why has the BBC taken this step and what does it mean for golf fans?

Much has been written and spoken recently about the BBC’s finances and its offering to licence fee payers. The funding agreement announced in the Chancellor’s July budget and the overview of the BBC’s future finances outlined in the Charter Review proposals make it clear that the BBC is faced with some challenging financial savings targets. Sport on the BBC is not immune to those pressures and they are compounded by the highly inflationary nature of the rights market.

Now, more than ever, it is critical that the BBC targets its resources to ensure maximum choice and value for money for licence fee payers. We have already made long term commitments to a wide range of major sporting events, including the Wimbledon Championships to 2020, the next two Football World Cups, Match of the Day to 2019, 6 Nations to 2021 and the next three Olympic Games.

So following the announcement that Sky had been awarded the live TV rights to The Open and in light of financial developments since, the choice to amend the current contract from next year was a pragmatic one. We know that many fans are unhappy with the loss of rights and in an ideal world the BBC would still be the home of live coverage of The Open.

A comprehensive two-hour highlights TV programme - a format which has already proven successful during the Ryder Cup - in a prime-time slot over four days will allow us to continue to bring all the best action and key moments from The Open to free-to-air viewers. With the live radio coverage unaffected and scope to provide something fresh and new on our mobile services, we are confident that our overall audience offering will remain a compelling one.

The BBC and The R&A have operated a successful partnership for more than 60 years and that is set to continue well into the next decade as we bring the Open Golf Championship to the widest possible audience.

Barbara Slater is Director, BBC Sport
